Based in Kent, John D Hotchkiss Limited Engineers has become one of the largest family owned heavy engineering companies in the area. With lifting capacity of 60 Tonnes, we operate at our strategically situated 20,000 square foot West Kingsdown workshop. We provide a range of heavy engineering services to suit a wide variety of purposes. We pride ourselves on our problem solving capabilities and our ability to give all of our customers the individual attention they deserve. Although focused mainly within the Cable and Paper Industries, Hotchkiss Engineers are frequently called upon for the repair, maintenance and refurbishment of machinery by many other industry sectors such as Cement, Shipping, Metal Reclamation, Subsea Cable, Energy Recovery Plants and Food.

• 60 Tonne Craneage
  Our 60 Tonne heavy lift craneage capability within the workshop allows us to take on heavy and bulky projects. Our experience gives us a unique understanding of craneage needs whatever the project, allowing us to provide our customers with a cost-effective and efficient service.
• Large CNC Milling Services
  Our extremely experienced staff coupled with our three state of the art CNC milling machines enable us to machine most heavy engineering components. Our CNC milling machines are run on 4, 5 and 7 axes and provide, amongst others, precision thread milling, gun drilling and screw cutting, working to drawings created by customers or by our in-house team of Draughtsmen.
• Large CNC Turning Services
  Drawing on over 65 years’ expertise, combining both traditional and innovative approaches in order to complete repair, maintenance and manufactured projects for our clients, we have a number of CNC and manual turning lathes in the factory. The largest of which is our CNC Shanks Lathe, which has the capacity to CNC Turn components up to 2.5 metres in diameter x 11.5 metres between centres.
• CNC Cylindrical Grinding Services
  With our large lifting ability of up to 60 metric tonnes we can manoeuvre extremely large cylindrical rolls into our roll grinder. This has been an invaluable service for many of our clients, in particular clients from the Paper and Cable industries. We have two cylindrical roll grinders, the largest of which is capable of CNC Grinding up to 11 metres between centres and up to 1.65 metres in diameter.
• Horizontal Boring Services
  We provide both horizontal and in-line boring services on our state of the art CNC Alesamonti Milling machine. Providing precision services on our milling machine gives us the capacity to carry out more than one process on the same machine, which in turn increases efficiency as well as ensuring that our workshop area is used to the maximum effect.
• Vertical Boring Services
  We have two manual vertical boring machines with capabilities of swinging up to 2 metres in diameter and up to 1 metre high. A recent vertical boring project was the refurbishment of canisters for Nuclear Power Station domes.
• Dynamic Balancing Services
  Our Dynamic Balancing machines run up to 2000 metres per minute at various grades using IRD software. This service is often used during roll refurbishment in order to provide Certified Conformity to our clients for insurance purposes.
• Roll Manufacture
  Our expertise in roll manufacture, refurbishment and maintenance enables us to manufacture rolls from a variety of materials including; Stainless Steel, HFF Steel and Aluminium. Our manufactured rolls are mainly used in the Paper, Gas, Mining and Metal Reclamation industries. Depending on requirements we are able to design rolls in-house using our 3D CAD design software and experienced Draughtsmen, or we can produce the rolls according to our client’s drawings.
• 3D CAD Design
  Here at Hotchkiss Engineers we have an experienced in-house team of Draughtsmen who are all fully trained 3D CAD Designers. With the help from our 3D CAD software we are able to quickly and easily identify and highlight any potential issues with the drawings, make any client changes with a swift turn around, whilst ensuring that our clients have an extremely accurate idea of how the end product will end up.
